From September 1997 to September 1998, I had the oppportunity to live in Seoul, Korea as an English teacher for one of the many language schools (or hagwans) that litter the country these days. Overall, I would say that it was a rough time, but as that time sinks more and more into the past, many fond memories stick out from that time.
One of the highlights of my time in Korea came when a small group of us went to Hwagyesa, a Buddhist temple up in the mountains in the north side of Seoul. Having lived in Seoul only just long enough to have become accustomed to the constant roar of the city, it was a mystical experience for me. The entire temple grounds were completely silent but for the sound of running water and the occasional chanting just at the threshhold of hearing. It was very intimate inside each of the Buddha Halls, and that, mixed with the cold of that day, and the silence of the surroundings left a lsting imperssion on me.
