1999 - Fools of the World

As of this writing, the 77's website describes the group as being a "power jazz trio." This is of course a load of crap. Not even sure what "power jazz" is. But listening to this disc, I know what they're talking about.

This really is a continuation on what the group was doing on Tom Tom Blues only more controlled and more disciplined. And frankly, that makes all the difference. The energy of the music is essentially the same, stored this time in the intensity of the arrangments rather than in shredding the wallpaper from five miles away. This is a little masterpiece of a recording; it took a good four years to complete these five songs.

Mike Roe has described the trio formation of The 77's as being a "songwriting team." It is here that this is fully realized for the first time.

This is also the debut of Fools of the World Records, where all subsequent Sevens-related work has been released.
