(The cover, by the way, is inspired by an old 1956 Blackwood Brothers gospel LP called Hymn Sing.)
Many critics have noted that the group really found their own voice on this record by emulating the styles of their influenes. "The Lust, the Flesh, the Eyes and the Pride of Life" sounds like a modern-day Byrds - and features Byrdman Chris Hillman on bass and mandolin. "Don't Say Goodbye" is clearly derivative of Frankie Valli. "Pearls Before Swine" has Roe as Jim Morrison. "What Was In That Letter" hearkens to The Clash at their most energetic.
"Do It For Love" was released as a single and did fairly well on college radio a good six months in advance of the album release. But the album itself was released within a week of another Island records release: U2's The Joshua Tree, whose runaway success caused the folks at Island to all but forget their other acts. Quite a letdown considering the momentum actually going into the release of this little gem. Due to (surprise!) disappointing sales, Island soon dropped the Sevens - and with the folding of EXIT Records, the band was left with only live shows to support themselves.
This record also shows the band in conflict - what do they say, "iron sharpens iron?" The band had separated into two ideological camps: "Mike / Jan" and "Mark / Aaron." A ton of songs came out of these sessions and it was largely the Roe songs that made it to the record.
